A journey through the Looking Glass. The imagery in the Wonderland Tarot is based on the work of Sir John Tenniel, who illustrated the well-known Alice in Wonderland books. In fact, the authors recommend that users of this deck obtain copies of the two Alice in Wonderland books -- the ones illustrated by Tenniel -- to help understand the symbolism of this tarot. The 22 card Major Arcana presents most of the major characters from Alice (i.e., The Mad Hatter - Fool, Alice - High Priestess, Tweedledee & Tweedledum - Lovers, Humpty Dumpty - Sun, White Rabbit - Judgement) & points to the overall plot, while the 56 card Minor Arcana relates the details of the story. In order that the deck more accurately reflect the Alice books, it breaks from tradition with its suit signs: Flamingos for Swords, Spades; Peppermills for Staves, Wands, Clubs; Hats for Cups, Hearts; & Oysters for Coins, Pentacles, Diamonds. Playing card suit marks are also included on the cards. |
