Known also by the names of Rumex acetosella, red sorrel, sour weed, and field sorrel, Sheep Sorrel is a plant native to North America, and can be commonly found in fields, grasslands, and woodlands. Widely considered by most to be a troublesome weed, it can also be found in culinary and landscaping practices. In culinary practices, it is often used as a garnish, or as a tart flavoring agent that has been used to curdle cheese. The leaves also have a tangy, lemon-flavor that has sometimes been used in salads. Some landscapers have also used it helping to prevent soil erosion, as the hearty plants can often sprout where others have a hard time taking root. In native Ojibwa medicine, it was also used as part of a folk treatment known as Essiac, which was used to treat cancer. Modern herbalist traditions find Sheep Sorrel to be quite useful in treating inflammation and diarrhea. Some also hold that it is quite useful in treating fevers as well, and even afflictions such as scurvy. The leaves and stems are often used to make a tea, used as a diuretic, which also has astringent properties.
